Increased Capacity Gained Without Disruption to Service as Rail Construction Project is Completed at Major Energy Facility
Queen City successfully completed the management and construction for the expansion of an existing track facility for a major energy facility in the Southeast region of the United States.
As the Prime contractor, Queen City provided project and construction management services expand the rail operations at the facility with the construction of more than 17,900 ft. of continuous welded rail, removal and re-installation of 2 No.10 turnouts and construction of 10 No. 10 new timber and steel turnouts. As part of this undertaking, Queen City also updated and constructed new track and yard crossings, as well as grade crossing signals and mainline switch work.
Additionally, Queen City successfully managed the apportionment of civil contractors working on extensive site and earthwork preparations for the project; which included clearing, storm drain installation, gabion basket wall construction, miscellaneous flatwork concrete, excavation, embankment construction, major rock blasting and chain link fence installation adjacent to live track operations. Queen City was able to accommodate additional work requests by the client for drainage improvements to the project site. The new facility provides increased storage capacity, improved access to connecting railroads and has optimized arrival and departure efficiencies.
The Queen City project team applied innovative construction methods to accommodate scope, size and the accelerated construction schedule of this complex project. This approach resulted in the successful delivery of the project on-time and on budget, meeting all project goals and objectives without issue. All work was completed in less than one year’s time. Most importantly, this facility remained in operations as Queen City’s team performed work under live track conditions. Exemplary construction and safety methods and principles were balanced to meet the operational needs of the facility without any safety incidences throughout the entire duration of the project. The expansion of this facility resulted in increased storage yard capacity for the client; which will allow for future growth and operational efficiencies.
